One of our favorite parts of a new release is playing with those new cards. Cracking booster packs for the first time, and sharing in the excitement of new cards and new interactions. We are excited to bring that experience online with the Strixhaven Prerelease event!

All you need is a Prerelease Kit of Strixhaven and some basic lands and you can build a 40 card deck to battle with throughout the event. Support your local game store by picking up a Prerelease Kit there and, if they are doing an online prerelease event, you should also check it out. Our event will run all weekend so hopefully you can join us when you’re done!

Don't have a Prerelease Kit? Don't sweat it! You can still earn points for your college playing Paper Commander on SpellTable!

In order to play on SpellTable, there's just a couple of things you'll need. Of course, first and foremost, you'll need your Strixhaven Prerelease Kit and basic lands to make your deck. You can pick these up from your local game store (find the nearest store to you here).

After that, you'll need some dice and tokens, or at least something to clearly indicate tokens.

For the technical side of things, you'll need a computer with internet access and a webcam (or a cellphone with a camera). You'll log into SpellTable using your Wizards account. Don't worry if you don't have one yet, you can create a Wizards account here!

Lastly, while not essential, we recommend having a microphone of some sort. More often than not, this will make things a lot smoother in games!

Now that you're ready to play head over to the Discord and hang out with the other players there until April 16.

The event will take place from the 16th - 18th April, over the following hours:

  • Day 1 - April 16th at 6PM PT - 10PM PT

  • Day 2 - April 17th at 7AM PT - 10PM PT

  • Day 3 - April 18th at 7AM PT - 6PM PT

The colleges of Strixhaven are all battling it out to be the best, and the prerelease is no different! Ahead of the event, you’ll be able to choose a team to champion in your games in the event! It’s not just about wins and losses—you’ll earn points for your team by completing challenges during your Sealed matches! You’ll be earning points towards a larger community competition.

Teams will each have a group of well-known personalities from the Magic community as leaders to chat and play with, and their own exclusive channels in Discord to communicate, strategize and help with deckbuilding!

Challenges throughout the event will earn points for your team, both in games and through Discord. We’ll keep a leaderboard updated with who’s in the lead, so you’ll know if your team is sitting pretty as king of the hill, or who’s hot on your heels to take the top spot!

This event is about more than just ordinary Strixhaven Sealed. You’ll also be able to team up with other players to face off against challenging World Bosses! Players will sign up similar to how they join a game, but not everyone can fight the Boss at the same time. Groups of three will be randomly chosen to face off with our World Boss representatives. Players not chosen can follow along on a Discord stream.

  • What triggers world events?

There is no way to truly predict when these things may happen. You’ll have to pay attention to the announcements channel so you don’t miss out!

  • Do I need to play by the world event rules?

Nope! If all you want is to play STX Sealed we’ll have a Traditional 1v1 queue that will award points just like any other match, only you won’t be expected to be following along with all the World Event events and challenges.

  • Who do I speak to if I don’t understand how world events work?

If you have questions about this or any of our activities, head on over to Discord and one of our staff will be happy to assist!

Throughout the weekend we’ll be celebrating Strixhaven with lots of different activities. So if you have some downtime between matches or are not able to play, you can still hang out with other players to participate in text-based games and challenges in the Discord server throughout the event. Try your hand at Magic Trivia, or show off your Sealed deck skills in the Deckbuilding Help channel. You can even test your drafting knowledge against some of your favorite pros by making first picks from different packs.
